Fall of Assad in Syria: Turkey's influence is growing due to pressure on Iran, India is also concerned

In just 12 days, the rebel campaign in Syria has brought an end to Bashar al-Assad's 54-year authoritarian rule. Assad has fled the country and taken refuge in Russia. This change in Syria could have a significant impact not only on the region but also on the politics of several countries. Experts believe that the fall of the Assad government in Syria is a major blow to Iran. The rebels have already attacked the Iranian embassy, which indicates the decline in Iran's regional influence.

Professor Ashwini Mohapatra of Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University said that India reaches the Central Asian market through Iran. India's Chabahar port project in Iran has increased India's strategic presence in the region. India's economic and geopolitical interests could be affected if Iran's stability is threatened. Professor Aftab Kamal Pasha also believes that Iran's weakness in West Asia is a cause for concern for India.

Iran's weakness has created opportunities for Turkey. Turkey has already started to exert influence in Lebanon and Iraq. Turkey's influence may increase further after the fall of Assad in Syria.

Turkey and Iran have a long-standing regional rivalry. Turkey supports Azerbaijan, while Iran supports Armenia. Azerbaijan’s victory in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, with Turkish support, is another defeat for Iran.

Encouraged by the situation in Syria, Turkey could move to control the Zangazur Corridor trade route. This would effectively cut Iran off from the Caucasus region.

Israel has already weakened Hezbollah and launched attacks led by Hamas. These developments have further weakened Iran’s position in West Asia.

Recent events in Syria could bring about a major shift in the balance of power in West Asia. Iran’s weakness has paved the way for Turkey and Israel to gain strength. This creates new challenges for India, the United States, and other international powers.
